PETERSBURG-AK Camaraderie, public service, fun. Those are a few of the reasons Petersburg’s firefighters, EMT’s, and search and rescuers give when you ask why they joined. With the exception of two full-time staff members, they are all unpaid volunteers. Some have been doing it for decades and others just signed up a year ago. They put in a lot of time training and staying ready to respond to the next emergency.
The Fire Department had a party to kick-off a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary earlier this month. Matt Lichtenstein stopped by the packed Sons of Norway hall to talk to some of the volunteers:
