A researcher says there’s low use of inhalants and other harmful legal products among Petersburg youth, in part because of the local availability of illegal substances, like alcohol and drugs.
Kristen Ogilvie, an associate research scientist with the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, this week visited Petersburg with the results of surveys of local students, parents and community members. It’s part of a statewide research and education effort involving 18 rural communities. The five-year study, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, tested a community prevention approach for misuse of harmful legal products. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Ogilvie about the study results and the types of products covered in the research.
