Anglers are getting ready for Petersburg’s annual salmon derby. The Chamber of Commerce event typically attracts four to six hundred participants. It starts at seven Friday morning and runs through 5 pm, Memorial Day. There will be no tagged fish to try for this year. Several volunteers spent the day trolling in the Frederick point area trying to catch to two kings, but fishing was slow and they were unable to land a legal fish to tag. But, as usual, the biggest king salmon wins 75 hundred dollars and there are thousands of dollars more in cash and other prizes donated by local merchants.
Contestants have to have their derby tickets validated and in hand before they start fishing. Matt Lichtenstein checked in with Derby Committee Chair Ron Loesch:
