One new student at Petersburg High School this year hails from Brazil while one returning student spent last year in Chile.
Both students took part in Rotary Youth Exchange, a cultural exchange program through Rotary International.
Kyla Willis of Petersburg, who turns 18 this month, spent last year in Santiago, Chile. 16-year-old Carolina Micluf hails from Sao Paulo, Brazil has just started her year abroad in Petersburg. Joe Viechnicki spoke with the two about their experiences, starting off with Micluf.
Willis has caught the travel bug and is eager to leave Alaska again after doing the Rotary exchange. Micluf is staying with a few local families during her year here.
Meanwhile, another local student Jasmine Ieremia is spending her year abroad in northern Thailand. Rotary is also looking for next year’s outbound student this fall. The youth exchange committee in town is Dave Berg, Theresa Craig and Nancy Murrison.
