Petersburg’s non-profit organization for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault faces an uncertain fiscal future and may be returning to a volunteer effort as state grant money runs out this year. Working Against Violence for Everyone, or WAVE, is in the third year of operating with a paid director, thanks to a state emerging programs grant. That funding, of just over 62-thousand dollars a year, runs out at the end of June and the organization isn’t allowed to apply for another state grant until 2017. WAVE is seeking federal funding to keep paying an employee but may have to rely on volunteers and fundraising in the meantime.

Joe Viechnicki spoke with WAVE director Annette Wooten about the future of her position.

Wooten says WAVE is looking for other funding possibilities, including local fund raising efforts. WAVE’s office is on Sing Lee Alley across from the Sons of Norway Hall. Their office number is 772-WAVE and the 24-hour crisis line is 518-0555.
