Voters will have a choice of Republican candidates for the House District 35 seat in the August primary election. The district includes Petersburg, Sitka and many other small communities in central Southeast Alaska. The seat is currently held by Sitka Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a three-term incumbent.
The last to file before the June 1st deadline is Dr. Richard Wein, a surgeon in Sitka. Wein has worked at Sitka Community Hospital and the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium. He was elected to the Sitka assembly last year. He will take on Kenny Karl Skaflestad, a construction worker, commercial fisherman and former mayor of Hoonah. Both are seeking the Republican nomination for the seat and the winner will take on Kreiss-Tomkins in the general election in November.
The primary election is Tuesday, August 21st.
