Petersburg has a new magistrate judge and she’s a familiar face in the courthouse and the community.
43-year-old Rachel Newport started this month in that new job after working as clerk of the court since April of 2018. Newport has lived here since first grade, worked other jobs in the community and raised kids here. She’s learning the ropes in her new job which will have her presiding over certain court proceedings, setting bail and issuing warrants, among other tasks.
Joe Viechnicki spoke with Newport about her new job.
June 1st was Rachel Newport’s first day as Petersburg’s new magistrate judge. She takes over from Debra O’Gara who left the job in May.
