Alaska State Troopers have identified the driver in last week’s fatal motor vehicle wreck on Mitkof Island about 27 miles south of Petersburg.
Troopers say 21-year-old Siguard Decker of Wrangell was behind the wheel of the Ford Excursion that went off Mitkof Highway after dark around July 27. Decker died in the crash along with his 19 year-old sister Helen, 29-year old Ian Martin of Petersburg and 37-year-old Dennis Lord of Elmira Heights, New York.
Petersburg mayor Mark Jensen offered condolences on behalf of the community during an assembly meeting Monday, August 3rd.
“Words cannot express the heartache,” Jensen said. “We stand in support with Wrangell during this difficult time and with the families of all involved.”
Jensen also recognized the response of firefighters, EMTs and law enforcement at the remote site on the southern end of the island.
A memorial was held in Wrangell on Saturday, August 1st.
An investigation by State Troopers continues. Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters said their investigation suggests speed and alcohol were factors in the wreck. She said toxicology testing results are not back yet and could take a while.
