School started August 29th for most students in Petersburg. Several new teachers are joining the Petersburg School District this year. Megan Smith is the new high school math teacher in town. But she’s not new to Southeast. Last year in Metlakatla she taught high school English and 8th grade math. She has a degree in English with an emphasis on education. But as she told KFSK’s Hannah Flor, math was her first love. She just finished her studies to become endorsed in math, and this will be her first year teaching the subject full-time.
KFSK has been airing conversations with new teachers during the first week of school. You can find Hannah Flor’s interview with new 5th grade teacher Gus Pennington here, new 4th grade teacher Sharon Paulson here, and new 1st grade teacher Jolie Norman here. New 4th grade teacher Thomas Hambley declined to speak with KFSK, and secondary special education teacher Rosal Concepcion did not respond to invitations to be interviewed.
