High school students from all over Southeast Alaska will be in Petersburg this week for Artfest. The annual festival was started in the late 90s by art teachers from Petersburg and Wrangell. It gives kids a chance to explore techniques and mediums they might not have access to at home. Each year a different town in Southeast hosts the event.
KFSK’s Hannah Flor sat down with Petersburg art teacher Ashley Lohr. She’s been participating in Artfest for more than 15 years. And while she’s currently on sabbatical, she’s been helping this year’s art teacher, Lisa Schramek Adams, with some of the planning. Lohr says that while the regional event was put on pause during the pandemic, she’s happy to see it back full-force this year.
Region 5 Artfest starts April 18 in Petersburg. The Artfest exhibition takes place on Sunday April 21, from 6:30 until 8 p.m. in the Petersburg High School gymnasium.
