Petersburg High School’s track and field team competed in Juneau last weekend. Teams from Sitka, Haines, Juneau, Craig, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Gustavus attended the event. The meet set Petersburg’s team up for the region five championships in Ketchikan this weekend.

High School track coach Casey Gates says the goal last weekend wasn’t for kids to get a personal record, or “PR” – that’s what they’re aiming for this weekend in Ketchikan. He told KFSK’s Hannah Flor that he pushed the kids hard in practices leading up to last weekend’s meet in Juneau.

Three Petersburg boys finished in the top three. Sophomore Noah Pawuk placed 3rd in 110 m hurdles, a personal record. Junior Erik Thynes also had a personal record, placing second in discus. And Senior Rik Cumps took third place in long jump.

The girls placed in two team events – Freya Tucker, Cadence Lopez, Maria Toth, and Gabriele Whitacre took third in the girls 400 relay, a personal record. Ashley Eilenberger, Nicole Durgan-Ware, Sara Eszik, and Kinley Lister placed first with a personal record in the sprint medley relay. Individual athlete results can be found here.
