As of 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 19, thirteen people had filed for nine seats on various borough boards. The filing deadline for Petersburg’s municipal election is Tuesday, August 20 at 4:30 p.m. There are 14 open positions this year and all of them are three-year terms.

There will be at least one contested race on the ballot. Five people have filed to fill two seats on Petersburg’s Borough Assembly. Incumbents Bob Lynn and Thomas Fine-Walsh are both running to keep their seats. James Valentine, owner of Viking Travel and a coach with the school district, is also running for Assembly. Former assembly member Marc Martinsen filed for the seat as well on Friday, August 16. Petersburg Medical Center employee Tony Vinson filed to run for assembly on Monday, August 19.

The library board also has a contested race. Incumbents Gina Esposito and Alec McMurren have both filed to run again. And Petersburg Medical Center employee Julie Spigelmyre filed to run on August 19.

There are two seats on the ballot for the harbor board and incumbents Daniel Cardenas and Donald Spigelmyre have both filed to run again.

Public Safety board incumbent John Havrilek has submitted his paperwork for candidacy. He was appointed to the position in July when board member Mark Testoni left Petersburg. There’s one open seat on the board, and so far, he’s running unopposed.

There are two seats up for grabs on the school board. Incumbent Carey Case has filed for reelection. Incumbent Jay Lister has not.

And there are two positions open on the hospital board. Incumbents Heather Conn has filed for reelection, incumbent Mika Hasbrouk has not.

No one has filed for the remaining three seats on the ballots. Those include two open seats on the planning commission. Incumbents Sally Dwyer and John Jensen have not filed for reelection.

There is only one seat open for Parks and Rec. That’s held by Adam Caster, who hasn’t filed for candidacy.

If positions are not filled in the October election, the Petersburg Borough Assembly will make one-year appointments to the board. Those seats would then be on the ballot again next year as a two-year term.

The deadline to file for candidacy is August 20 at 4:30 p.m. Those interested in filing can find the paperwork upstairs at the municipal building or at petersburgak.gov. Candidates can drop off completed paperwork at the municipal building.
