The Central Southeast moose hunt is wrapping up, with less than a week before the season ends. Hunters have harvested 100 bull moose in the fall hunt near Petersburg, Wrangell, and Kake as of October 9. The season opened September 15. It’s a restricted antler hunt – only bulls with specific antler configurations can be taken.

The highest harvests come from Kupreanof Island with 37 bulls, Kuiu Island with 16 bulls, and the Stikine River with 18 bulls.

There were also seven bulls taken on Wrangell Island, five on Mitkof Island, and one on Woewodski Island.

On the mainland north of Petersburg, hunters took five in Farragut Bay, two from Thomas Bay and three from the rest of the mainland.

Five of the kills were illegal – two in the Stikine River area, one in Thomas Bay, one on Kupreanof Island, one on Kuiu Island, and one on Etolin Island.

The fall moose hunt covers several areas: half a dozen main islands in Unit 3 plus several smaller ones, Unit 1-B on the mainland, and the extreme southern portion of Unit 1-C, also on the mainland.

The season is open through October 15. Last year, a record 141 moose were harvested, breaking 2021’s record of 132 bulls.
