School dress code changes are in the works for Petersburg’s middle and high schoolers, and the administrator making the changes wants feedback.

Secondary principal Brad King will present the proposed changes to the Petersburg School Board at tonight’s meeting. He said he’s suggesting the shift because staff does not consistently enforce the current dress code. He said policy that can’t be consistently enforced doesn’t belong on the books. Right now, the dress code prohibits shirts that show the wearer’s torso, tops with spaghetti straps, and skirts shorter than mid-thigh, among other things. Language in the proposed dress code is much less specific. It includes the requirements that shirts and dresses “have fabric on the front, back, and sides” and “fabric covering private parts not be see-through.” The board won’t vote on the dress code, since principals with the Petersburg School District get to decide what goes into the school handbook.

The board will also get an update from superintendent Robyn Taylor on the district’s plans to replace the combined high school and middle school roof and improve security. Voters approved a ballot proposition earlier this month that funds the projects with a $3.5 million bond. Engineers are about two-thirds done with a design for the project, and the district plans to put them out to bid early this winter.

The Petersburg School Board will swear in a new board member at tonight’s meeting. Kari Petersen was elected in this month’s municipal election to fill the seat occupied by Jay Litster. He chose not to run for the position after a decade on the board. Incumbent Carey Case was reelected to her seat, but does not need to be sworn in.

Petersburg’s School Board will meet this evening at 5:30 p.m. in the middle and high school library. That’s a half an hour earlier than usual, because board members hope to wrap up the meeting in time for the high school band concert at 7 p.m. in the Wright Auditorium.

KFSK will broadcast the meeting live and will post the recording in our School Board Meeting Archive on kfsk.org.
