All Southeast candidates move on to the general election but Stedman a clear favorite

In Southeast Alaska, there were no competitive primaries for state House and Senate. All candidates in the primaries will advance to the ranked choice general election. In the House District 2 race, which includes Petersburg, Sitka, and most of Prince of Wales Island, independent Rebecca Himschoot of Sitka received 54 percent of the vote, with Republican Kenny Karl Skaflestad of Hoonah bringing in 46 percent.

Petersburg assembly moves forward with changes to spending limits

Petersburg’s borough assembly advanced a measure that would ease some restrictions on local government spending at a regular meeting, Aug. 15. The ordinance would eliminate spending limits in the municipal code for department heads and increase the amount the borough manager is allowed to spend without assembly approval from $30,000 to $75,000.

Election group encourages voters to rank U.S. House candidates on Aug. 16 ballot

‘Alaskan Bush People’ receive the cold shoulder when looking for land in Southeast

Reality TV stars from the long-running Discovery series, Alaskan Bush People, made a brief stop in Petersburg earlier this month. The famous Brown family tried to buy land after living in Washington the last three years. But locals did not welcome them as neighbors.
