State of Alaska issues first air quality alert of 2023 as Canada wildfires rage

The Alaska Division of Air Quality issued its first smoke alert of the year for Southeast Alaska at 9 a.m on July 13th. The region will be impacted by smoke from wildfires raging just over the Canadian border. As of Friday, July 7th, traces of smoke became visible across Alaska. Now, the winds have shifted and the fires have gotten worse.

Petersburg sees increase in fentanyl-laced pills

Southeast Alaska has seen an uptick in fentanyl-laced pills. Fentanyl is a highly addictive opioid fifty to a hundred times stronger than morphine. In Petersburg and other Southeast communities, law enforcement has found fentanyl most often in counterfeit blue pills which are designed to look like the prescription opioid oxycontin.
